📜 Legend
Leroux was a journalist, and he wove real details of the Palais Garnier into his tale. Beneath the opera house sits a vast water tank, built because the foundations kept flooding, which became the Phantom's underground lake. In 1896 a counterweight of the great chandelier fell during a performance and killed a member of the audience, and Leroux turned the accident into his most famous scene.
