📜 Legend
Hugo wrote the novel partly as a protest. In the 1820s Paris was neglecting or tearing down its medieval buildings, and Notre-Dame itself was crumbling. Making the cathedral the true hero of his book, Hugo helped turn public opinion, and in the 1840s the architects Lassus and Viollet-le-Duc began a major restoration. Hugo said the story grew from a Greek word he found carved into a wall of one of the towers: ANANKE, fate.
