📜 Legend

In the rain-soaked summer of 1816, the 'year without a summer' after the eruption of Mount Tambora, Lord Byron challenged his guests at the Villa Diodati by Lake Geneva to write ghost stories. Eighteen-year-old Mary Godwin, soon to be Mary Shelley, produced the tale that became Frankenstein. It fed on the science of the day: experiments in galvanism, where electric current made the muscles of dead animals and even executed criminals twitch.

🎭 Myth vs Movie

True or false? Make your guess, then click a card (or press r) for the verdict.

  • The monster's name is Frankenstein.

    ✘ FALSE

Victor Frankenstein is the creator. Shelley never names the creature; he is called 'wretch', 'daemon' and 'creature'.

  • In Shelley's novel, Frankenstein's monster is brought to life by lightning.

    ✘ FALSE

Shelley keeps the method vague: Victor infuses 'a spark of being'. The lightning-and-machinery spectacle belongs to the 1931 film.

  • In Shelley's novel, Frankenstein's monster is articulate and well read.

    ✔ TRUE

He learns language by secretly watching a cottage family and reads Paradise Lost, Plutarch's Lives and The Sorrows of Young Werther.

  • Victor Frankenstein's assistant Igor appears in the novel.

    ✘ FALSE

Victor works alone. The 1931 film gave him a hunchbacked helper named Fritz; Ygor was Bela Lugosi's character in Son of Frankenstein (1939).
