💀 Facts

- He must rest in earth from his homeland and ships fifty boxes of it to England
- He casts no reflection, as Jonathan Harker discovers while shaving
- Stoker took the name from Vlad III of Wallachia, but little else
- Bela Lugosi played the Count on Broadway in 1927 before the film
- Lugosi was buried in one of his Dracula capes in 1956
📜 Legend
Stoker never went to Transylvania. He built his Count from library research: travel writing about the Carpathians, Emily Gerard's essay on Transylvanian superstitions, and reports of the 18th-century vampire panics in Serbia, where villagers dug up corpses they blamed for deaths. Those folklore vampires were bloated, ruddy peasants, nothing like a cultured nobleman. Earlier stories such as Polidori's The Vampyre (1819) and Le Fanu's Carmilla (1872) had already given the vampire aristocratic polish.

🎭 Myth vs Movie
True or false? Make your guess, then click a card (or press r) for the verdict.
In Stoker's novel, sunlight destroys Dracula.
✘ FALSE
The Count walks through London by day; sunlight only weakens his powers. Death-by-daylight arrived with the film Nosferatu (1922).
Dracula casts no reflection in a mirror.
✔ TRUE
Jonathan Harker cuts himself shaving when he realises the Count, standing behind him, does not appear in the glass.
Folklore vampires were pale, elegant aristocrats.
✘ FALSE
Eastern European accounts describe swollen, red-faced corpses of ordinary villagers. The aristocrat is a literary invention.
Dracula is a faithful portrait of Vlad the Impaler.
✘ FALSE
Stoker borrowed the name and a few lines of history from a book about Wallachia. Most scholars think he knew little of Vlad's cruelty.
A vampire must be invited in before entering a home.
✔ TRUE
Van Helsing explains that the Count may not enter a house unless someone within first bids him come.
