📜 Legend

Tod Browning and Lon Chaney made ten films together, and this one, from Browning's own story The Hypnotist, is the one nobody alive has seen. A man is found shot dead in a London mansion and the death is ruled suicide; five years later the empty house is suddenly occupied by a stooping, bat-like figure in a tall beaver hat and a pale girl who may or may not be a vampire. Inspector Burke of Scotland Yard, also played by Chaney, investigates, and the twist is that the vampire is Burke himself in disguise, part of an elaborate hypnotic trap to make the real murderer confess. Chaney built the look himself: wire fittings worn like monocles that stretched his eyes wide, reportedly too painful to wear for long, and a set of sharpened false teeth. The film was a hit, but MGM's last known print was in Vault 7 when it burned, reportedly in 1965. In 2002 Rick Schmidlin reconstructed it for Turner Classic Movies from the script and around 200 stills, and Browning had already remade the story himself as Mark of the Vampire in 1935, with Bela Lugosi in the cloak.
