πΊ "Tonight's guest was made, not born: six feet of river clay with one very important word on its forehead. Please don't touch the lettering."
π Facts

- Writing emet ('truth') on its forehead wakes it; erasing a letter leaves met ('dead')
- The word golem appears once in the Bible, in Psalm 139, meaning unformed substance
- The most famous golem was said to protect the Jewish quarter of Prague
- Legend says its remains lie in the attic of Prague's Old-New Synagogue
- In most tales the golem cannot speak
π Legend
The Talmud tells of a sage who formed a man and sent him to a colleague, who realised it couldn't speak and returned it to dust. Over the centuries, golem legends grew, and the most famous tells of Rabbi Judah Loew, the Maharal of Prague, who shaped a golem from river clay in the 16th century to defend the city's Jewish quarter from attack. Written versions tying the story to Rabbi Loew only appear in the 19th century, long after his death.
