Universal bought the rights to 'Dracula's Guest', a short story published in 1914, two years after Bram Stoker's death, and used little of it. Instead the film picks up moments after Dracula (1931) ends. Countess Marya Zaleska burns her father's body, hoping to be free of her thirst, then turns to a psychiatrist for a cure. That makes her one of the screen's first reluctant, sympathetic vampires.
